HubSpot adds AI credit spend caps and seat-to-credit swaps

HubSpot introduced default AI credit spend caps, seat-to-credit swaps mid-contract, feature-level credit limits, credit packs and Pay-as-You-Go billing.

HubSpot announced changes to how customers buy and control AI usage in a company news post updated October 15, 2026. Spend controls are on by default, with an account-level credit limit of up to 50% above monthly credits that customers can adjust. Customers can also set limits by feature and by action, swap seats for credits or another seat type without waiting for renewal, and cap their marketing contacts tier. HubSpot says it will not move a business to a larger plan because usage grows.

The details

  • Customers can set credit limits at the account, feature and action level.
  • Seat-to-credit and seat-to-seat swaps can be made by the customer before the contract renews.
  • When a marketing contacts list reaches a customer-set limit, the customer chooses between upgrading or cleaning up the list.
  • Credit packs are sold upfront at a flat monthly rate, and Pay-as-You-Go charges for usage beyond monthly credits only when work completes.
  • Further detail is published on HubSpot's AI credits product page.

Context

The post notes that earlier in 2026 HubSpot moved Customer Agent and Prospecting Agent to outcome-based pricing, with customers paying only when tasks are complete. In our coverage, HubSpot shipped its Fall 2026 Spotlight with Breeze Assistant and a self-updating Smart CRM on September 16, and expanded its partnership with OpenAI with a ChatGPT Ads integration the same day. The October changes concern billing controls for credit-based AI features. Jon Dick, HubSpot's Chief Customer Officer, said "We built these changes so customers can set the limits."
